The month of June brings along with it many new and exciting things – summer is right around the corner, but our personal favorite is celebrating Father’s Day! Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday in June, and it’s never too early to start thinking about what you’re going to get dad this year.

It can be difficult to find the perfect gift for dad, especially if your dad is older. As men age, the things they find meaningful and important change. With that in mind, we put together a different kind of gift guide for senior dads so you can find that perfect, meaningful gift for Father’s Day!

The Gift of Time

Time is one of the most meaningful gifts you could give on Father’s Day for older dads. Whether you plan a picnic outing to enjoy the sunny weather or spend the day indoors, spending time with him is really what he is going to remember and appreciate. Father’s Day is perfect for sharing beloved memories, and even carrying out some favorite family traditions!

Don’t have any traditions? That’s okay because it’s never too late to start one! They key is finding an activity that everyone in the family can enjoy together that makes your loved one feel special.

Think of his Hobbies

Think back on all those things that your dad loves doing. If he’s a big reader, why not give dad a bestseller from his favorite genre? Does he love puzzles? Get him a large puzzle or even a crossword or Sudoku book.

He’ll appreciate the fact that you know him well enough to support his hobbies, but it’s also a good idea to let dad try something new. Painting or journaling might just become your dad’s new favorite hobby if you give him the supplies! What’s even better is that all these kinds of brain-stimulating activities can actually decrease one’s risk of dementia.

Activities for the Summer

Since Father’s Day falls right around the first day of summer, think of ways that your older dad can enjoy the sunny weather. Does he enjoy fishing or playing golf? Set up a family fishing trip or golf game for the whole family to enjoy together. Is he a big movie-goer? He might enjoy a gift certificate to the movie theatre or even one of his favorite movies or TV shows on DVD.

Another option is looking up a list of activities organized by community centers that are specifically designed for seniors during the summer months that your dad can enjoy. This is a simple and fun way for your dad to socialize with others, but just remember these summer safety tips for seniors so that your dad can stay safe while having fun in the summer sun.

Maintain His Independence

Dad was always there for you when you were little, and now it’s your turn to be there for him when he’s older. But the reality is that many of us may not always be able to be there for our loved ones…but Medical Guardian can! With a medical alert system from Medical Guardian, both you and your loved ones can enjoy the peace of mind that comes along with knowing that they’ll be able to receive help in any emergency. So if you’re thinking of meaningful gifts for Father’s Day, give your dad the gift of a life-saving medical alert system this Father’s Day.
