It’s a scary reality that one in three older adults fall every year. That’s why 86-year-old Sara from Avon Park, Florida, was looking to get herself protected in case she fell or another emergency occurred.

After speaking with our Life Safety Consultant Jeffrey at the beginning of June, Sara decided that our Premium Guardian was the perfect medical alert device for her. Not only would the Premium Guardian protect her both at home and on-the-go, but unlike our other medical alert devices, she would also be able to speak to an emergency operator directly through the wearable device.

After receiving and activating the Premium Guardian on June 12, Sara was at peace of mind knowing that she could receive help no matter where she was. However, Sara had no idea she would use her medical alert device so soon after activating her system.

The very next day at around 10:07 in the morning, one of our emergency operators received an emergency alarm from Sara’s Premium Guardian. The operator, Robert, spoke with Sara’s daughter-in-law Lynn who frantically explained that Sara was in pain and couldn’t walk. Robert immediately contacted Sara’s local EMT services and sent them directly to Sara’s home.

Within minutes, an ambulance arrived and transported Sara to the hospital. Sara was then admitted for bronchitis and severe dehydration. She is currently recuperating in a rehabilitation facility getting her strength back, but thanks to Medical Guardian, she’s expected to return home safely and in good health.

On June 21, we heard from Sara’s daughter Emily, who was very thankful Medical Guardian was looking out for her mother as she stated, “The Premium Guardian saved my mother’s life!”

If you learn anything from Sara’s story, it’s that now is always the time to get protected. There can be many things holding people back from owning a medical alert device, but the reality is that these devices really do save lives – every single day.

The Dangers of Dehydration

As Sara discovered back in June, dehydration can lead to a very serious medical emergency. Dehydration is actually very common among seniors, especially during these hot and humid summer months. Why? As we age, we lose the ability to conserve water, we become less aware of our thirst and we cannot adjust to extreme temperature changes as easily.

The tips below will help you stay hydrated and safe this summer:
  1. Drink plenty of water. Obviously you should drink water before, while and after you go outside, but do you know the recommended daily amounts of water? 13 cups of water a day for men and 9 cups a day for women.
  2. Avoid alcohol and soda. We know these caffeinated drinks can be tempting, especially during summer holidays and family gatherings, but they will only dehydrate you. You can never go wrong with water!
  3. Include hydrating foods in your diet. Did you know there are actually foods that help hydrate you? Strawberries, yogurt and cucumbers are all hydrating foods you can easily include in your diet.
  4. Avoid the sun’s peak hours. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, try to stay indoors during these peak hours.
