Life Safety Consultant Jonathan Williams spoke with Marilyn B. from Palos Park, IL earlier this year on January 14. Despite being 83 years old, Marilyn certainly wasn’t letting her age hold her back! She is still extremely active, but she lives alone and was worried about getting help should she ever experience an emergency. Marilyn even travels alone a lot, so Jonathan suggested our Mobile Guardian device, which would keep her protected both at home and on-the-go.

It was just less than four months later that her Mobile Guardian device saved her life!

Marilyn was relaxing at home on April 4 when she began to feel chest pain at around 10:00 am. Her heart was beating very fast and even her neck was getting very stiff. Marilyn knew right away that something was wrong, so she used her Mobile Guardian to contact our 24/7 Monitoring Center.

Emergency operator Becky answered the call, and after Marilyn explained her symptoms and how she needed medical attention right away, Becky sprang into action and immediately dispatched EMTs to Marilyn’s home.

Becky then called all of Marilyn’s emergency contacts, one of whom was Marilyn’s daughter Laura. Although she initially missed Becky’s call, Laura was able to call her back and find out which hospital her mother had been taken to.

Many people wonder what happens if emergency contacts are unable to answer our emergency operators’ calls. Don’t worry; the answer is quite simple and effective no matter what kind of emergency your loved one may be experiencing. If you’re unable to answer the call, our 911-trained emergency operators leave a voicemail providing you with a unique tracking number to use when calling our Monitoring Center so, like Laura, you can get real-time updates of your loved one’s condition from our emergency operators.

The Heart of the Matter

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women in America? A startling 610,000 deaths a year are a direct result of heart disease according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is why it is so important for everyone to know the warning signs of a heart attack. Recognizing the warning signs of a heart attack is key in receiving the immediate care that you need.

Do you know the warning signs of a heart attack? See for yourself below:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

This may be a lesser-known fact, but the warning signs of a heart attack actually vary according to one’s gender. While chest pain or discomfort is the biggest warning sign of a heart attack in both men and women, women are much more likely to experience the following symptoms: shortness of breath, nausea and back, neck or jaw pain.
