What is Fall Detection?

Because falls happen when we least expect, an alert with fall detection technology is built-in insurance. This advanced technology works even if you are unable to press the help button on your device after a fall. The automatic fall detection can sense a fall and call the monitoring center for help on its own. An operator will ask if you need help and if you are unable to answer, the monitoring center will contact emergency services to ensure you get the needed help. Read on to learn if this technology is for you.

How Fall Detection Works

Fall detection technology uses accelerometers to detect falls. Our devices use a triaxial accelerometer that measures vibrations in three areas of the body: at your waist, head to toe and posterior upward. If your device senses an abrupt change in movement, it will activate the fall detection alert. This can also happen if you drop your device, which causes a false alarm. But don’t worry, false alarms are expected. Cancelling a false alert is easy. Simply tell the operator you do not need help.

Always Protected

How Fall Detection Works

Adding fall detection technology to your device is an extra layer of safety that almost everyone seeks. There are several reasons why customers purchase the technology.

Chronic Medical Condition

Many chronic conditions put you at a higher risk of falling and sustaining an injury from that fall.

Certain Medications

Sedatives and other medications can put you at risk of falling. This is an added risk.

Active Lifestyle

Fall detection brings a layer of added security if you are outdoorsy, enjoy hiking, and engage in outdoor activities.

Live Alone

People who live alone are more vulnerable to injury because they may not have someone to help in an emergency. Our alerts are used for all types of emergencies, not just falls.

Balance Issues

Balance Issues Issues with your ears, brain, muscles and gait can cause you to feel off balance. If you’re dealing with these problems, a medical alert with fall detection is a good choice.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a medical alert device? Can't I just use my cell phone to call 911 in an emergency?

Unlike a cell phone, our medical alert devices are highly water-resistant wearable buttons, perfect for shower use. Additionally, a cell phone will not always be nearby in an emergency, making it an unreliable option when it comes to ensuring your safety. With our devices, however, you can rest assured that you will always have access to help by wearing a discreet and lightweight button around your neck, wrist, or on a clip. Our medical alert devices can also be used for more than just emergency situations including contacting a family member or loved one at the push of a button. The ease of use of our products with a single button press truly set our devices apart from your typical cell phone, especially in the case of an emergency.

Where are Medical Guardian's medical alert services available?

Our services are available in all 50 states. We also provide services in Puerto Rico and Canada, but device restrictions may apply.

Are Medical Guardian's medical alert systems covered by Medicare?

Standard Medicare does not cover the cost of a medical alert device. However, some Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare part C), may cover or reimburse you for the costs associated with a device. You would need to check with your specific Medicare Advantage provider to see if they would cover one of our devices. Medicaid may cover the cost of a medical alert device, depending on your plan and your state. Check with your Medicaid provider to see if they would cover one of our devices.

Do I need a landline to use a Medical Guardian medical alert system?

No. While our Classic Guardian requires a landline telephone connection, we offer another home-based medical alert device, Home 2.0, and two mobile products, Mobile 2.0 and Mini Guardian, that use a nationwide cellular network to contact our 24/7 monitoring center at no extra cost to you.

Where is Medical Guardian's monitoring center located?

Our monitoring center is located right here in the United States, so you never have to worry about experiencing any language barriers in an emergency.
